I met Amy when I was about 7 years old, and Jake when I was 13(ish). There's something so subtle about the passage of time. I found myself literally speechless in wonder as I edited these pictures and tried to rationalize how the three of us transitioned from being inseparable high school students laughing through endless hours of choir and play rehearsals to living these independent lives as musicians, photographers, and business women.
There are many advantages to being a photographer, one being that I have the opportunity to capture a human being in the midst of this passing of time. The other is that I get to zoom in really close to the faces of my subjects as I edit. This is a particularly profound experience when I've know the person in the picture for literally all of my life. The smile lines, cheekbones, and scars not present in the early years suddenly become visible to me, endearing that person even further into my heart and causing me to wonder about the ever-present passage of time.
Ecclesiastes 7:2 says, "It is better to go to a funeral than to a banquet, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart." I don't think Solomon was condemning the enjoyment fellowship and food when he said this. Rather, I think he understood the irreplaceable richness that life gains when one is open to pondering both the reality of mortality and the mystery of life, enjoyment, and purpose.
I hope you enjoy these pictures that have captured two lives as they were in February of 2012, and I invite you to ponder for yourself this mysterious, poignant, and beautiful thing we all share called life.
And now for some of just Amy. I love the color of the coat she wore! And her eyes are SO blue!
